How to convert PNG to SVG in 3 steps
- Upload your PNG. Drag the file into the box at the top of this page. Use the largest version you have; Vecfy accepts up to 3200 px per side.
- Pick the options. Keep Remove background on for a transparent SVG. Turn on Solid vector if the logo has gradients or glossy effects and you plan to print, cut or embroider it.
- Zoom, then download. In about ten seconds you get the original and the vector side by side. Scroll to zoom up to 24× and check edges, corners and small letters. If it looks right, pay once and download the SVG.
Vectorizing and previewing is free (5 times per day). You only pay for the files you actually download, with no subscription and no credits that expire.
Embedded PNG vs. real vector: the difference that matters
Search for "PNG to SVG" and you will find many sites that simply place the PNG inside an SVG container using an <image> tag. The file ends in .svg and opens in a browser, but it is still a grid of pixels. Enlarge it and it blurs. Send it to a cutting machine and nothing gets cut. A print shop will send it back.
| PNG embedded in SVG | PNG vectorized to SVG | |
|---|---|---|
| Scales without losing quality | No | Yes |
| Edit colors and shapes | No | Yes, one layer per color |
| Cricut, Silhouette, laser | Not cuttable | Cuttable paths |
| File size | Same as the PNG (or larger) | Usually smaller |
Vecfy always vectorizes. The downloaded SVG contains only <path> shapes with solid fills, no embedded bitmap, no scripts and no external fonts. You can check it yourself by opening the file in a text editor.
Why free PNG to SVG converters produce heavy files
Classic auto-trace tools, including the open-source Potrace engine many websites run behind the scenes, follow the pixels literally. Every anti-aliased edge of a PNG contains dozens of in-between shades. The tracer sees each shade as a new color, so a four-color logo comes out with forty shapes, thin halos around every letter and thousands of nodes.
The result is a vector on paper, but painful in practice:
- Illustrator or Inkscape slows down when you select it.
- A cutting machine makes hundreds of tiny cuts along the halos.
- Recoloring means hunting down every stray shape by hand.
Vecfy adds a step before tracing. The AI looks at the whole PNG and decides the real palette, for example "navy, white, gold and red". The tracer is then only allowed to use those colors. Shades that belong to the same ink merge back together, so the SVG has a handful of clean shapes instead of a pile of fragments.
Transparent PNG to SVG (and white backgrounds)
If your PNG already has transparency, the alpha channel is respected and the SVG comes out transparent too. If the PNG has a solid white or colored background, leave Remove background on: Vecfy detects the background color from the borders and removes it, while keeping the insides of letters like O, A and B open and preserving white details that are part of the design.
Which PNG files convert best
A PNG to SVG converter works best on artwork made of flat areas of color:
- Logos, monograms and wordmarks
- Icons, badges, stickers and emblems
- Cartoon mascots and flat illustrations
- Line art, hand lettering and signatures
- Clip art and simple drawings
Photos are a different case. No tool turns a photograph into a faithful vector, because a photo has millions of subtle tones. Vecfy will turn a photo into a stylized, poster-like illustration with a limited palette, which can look great for stickers or t-shirts, but it will not be a photographic copy.
Resolution matters too. A 1000 px PNG gives the AI far more information than a 150 px thumbnail. If the only file you have is small, try it anyway: the tracer regularizes shapes and straightens lines, although very thin details may disappear.
What to do with your new SVG file
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an open standard maintained by the W3C and supported by every modern browser and design app. You can read the specification on the MDN SVG reference. In practice, your file opens directly in:
- Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition or higher) for vinyl, HTV and paper cutting. See our guide on making SVG files for Cricut.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge for laser cutting and engraving. See SVG for laser engraving.
- Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity, CorelDRAW and Figma to edit shapes, change colors or export EPS, PDF and AI.
- Websites and apps, where an SVG logo stays crisp on retina screens and usually weighs less than the PNG.
Each color arrives as its own named group, so recoloring a logo is a two-click job. Text from the original PNG is already converted to outlines, so the file looks the same on any computer, even without the font.
PNG vs SVG: when to keep each format
PNG is a raster format: perfect for screenshots, photos with transparency and web images displayed at a fixed size. SVG is a vector format: perfect for logos, icons and anything that must be printed, cut or scaled. Most brands keep both. If you want the full comparison, read raster vs vector graphics explained.
Converting PNG to SVG is worth it whenever the artwork needs to grow, be edited or be produced physically. Keep the PNG for quick sharing; use the SVG as your master file.
Converting PNG logos and icons to SVG for websites
Web developers convert PNG icons and logos to SVG for three reasons: sharpness on high-density screens, smaller files and the ability to style the graphic with CSS. A 512 px PNG logo can weigh 30 to 80 KB; the same logo as a clean vector is often under 10 KB and looks perfect on a 4K monitor or a phone.
Tips for web-ready SVG
- Keep the viewBox. The Vecfy file includes a
viewBox, so you can resize it freely with CSS width and height without distortion. - Recolor with CSS. Each color sits in its own group. Give the group a class or replace a fill with
currentColorto make an icon follow the text color in dark mode. - Inline or file? Inline the SVG in your HTML for icons you want to animate or recolor; reference it as an
<img>for logos that never change. - Optimize further if needed. Tools like SVGO can shave a few more bytes. Because the file has no embedded bitmap and few nodes, there is usually little left to remove.
Favicons are a special case: most browsers accept an SVG favicon, but keep a PNG fallback for older devices. You can export that fallback from the vector at any size, or use the high-resolution PNG Vecfy includes with your download.
Troubleshooting: when the SVG does not look right
Thin lines disappeared
Hairlines that are only one or two pixels wide in the PNG carry very little information. Upload a larger version of the image, or add a note such as "keep the thin outline around the badge".
A color is slightly off
The AI picks the color it sees. If the PNG was saved with a color profile or heavy compression, the visible color may differ from your official brand value. Because every color is a separate layer, fixing it takes one click in any vector editor.
Part of the design was removed with the background
This happens when a design element has exactly the same color as the background and touches the edge. Turn off Remove background, or describe what to keep in Notes and run it again. Re-running is free within the daily limit.
Shadows became solid blobs
Soft drop shadows cannot be represented by flat shapes without stair-stepping. Either keep them as a separate dark shape, or ask the AI to ignore the shadow in Notes for a cleaner, more modern result.
